Using Sage Smudge Sticks, Feathers, Incense & Sacred Tools
The practice of cleansing and smudging has been around for many years. We get asked many questions about the best way to do this and also which are the best instruments to use.
In this guide, we’ll explore how to cleanse your space using sage smudge sticks, incense, feathers, and other spiritual tools, along with step-by-step instructions to help you perform your own ritual with intention.
Creating a calm, balanced environment is essential for spiritual wellbeing. Whether you’ve just moved into a new home, experienced a stressful event, or simply want to refresh your energy, cleansing and smudging your space is a powerful ritual practiced for centuries across many cultures.
What Is Smudging?
Smudging is a traditional practice that involves burning sacred herbs - most commonly sage smudge sticks— -to purify energy. The smoke is believed to clear negative or stagnant energy and invite in positivity, clarity, and peace.
Today, many people incorporate smudging into their spiritual cleansing rituals, meditation routines, and home energy clearing practices.
Tools You’ll Need for Cleansing Your Space
Before you begin, gather your tools. Each item has its own purpose and symbolism:
Sage Smudge Sticks
Sage Smudge Sticks are available in many different types and sizes. The most popular is dried Californian white sage as it’s known for its strong purifying properties and is ideal for deep energy clearing. But you can use any dried variety of sage stick for cleansing.
Feathers
A feather is traditionally used to guide and direct the smoke into corners, doorways, and around the body. It represents air and intention.
Abalone Shell (or Fireproof Bowl)
An abalone shell is commonly used to catch ash and burning embers from your sage smudge stick. It also symbolises water, balancing the fire element of the burning herbs.
Alternative options include:
- Ceramic bowl
- Cast iron dish
- Heatproof plate
Incense
Incense is a gentler alternative or complement to sage. Popular options include:
- Sandalwood (grounding)
- Frankincense (spiritual connection)
- Palo Santo (uplifting and cleansing)
Optional Additions
- Crystals (e.g., clear quartz, black tourmaline)
- Candles
- Essential oils or sprays
- Sound tools (bells, singing bowls)
Set Your Intention
Before lighting anything, take a moment to focus. Ask yourself:
• What energy do I want to release?
• What do I want to invite in?
Your intention is the most important part of the ritual.
Once you are ready light the stick, and let it burn for a few seconds, then gently blow it out allowing it to smoke (much like you would an incense stick).
Make sure to place it over your abalone shell or a fireproof dish to catch embers.

Start by cleansing your own energy:
- Waft smoke around your body using your hand or a feather
- Move from head to toe
- Focus on your breath and intention
Then blow the smoke in to corners of your house (with the windows open) and allow the smoke to reach all the corners (where stagnant energy can collect), the doorways, windows mirrors, and high-traffic areas. Use the feather to guide the smoke where needed.
You can also run your crystals through the smoke in order to cleanse them, ensuring any embers are caught in a bowl or shell as you go.
The smoke will purify the negative energy and having the windows open will allow the energy to completely leave the house.
When you run your crystals through the smoke this will also remove any negative energy they will have collected.
Once you are happy that cleansing is complete, put the sage out by gently dipping it into some sand or water or dampen with a wet cloth ensuring the embers are completely out. Never leave burning herbs unattended.

You can use loose dried sage leaves in a smudging bowl or abalone shell as an alternative to a pre-made and hand-tied stick if you find it easier, Sage wood or Palo Santo wood are great alternatives too.
Although harder to light then traditional Sage, Palo Santo Wood (holy-wood) has other healing qualities and its piney, mint and citrus scents make it great for clearing sinuses if you are suffering from a cold too.
When Should You Cleanse Your Space?
You may want to perform a cleansing ritual when:
- Moving into a new home
- After illness or emotional stress
- Following arguments or heavy energy
- During full or new moons
- As part of a regular spiritual practice
Final Thoughts
Cleansing and smudging your space is more than just a ritual - it’s a mindful practice that supports emotional clarity, spiritual wellbeing, and energetic balance.
Whether you use sage smudge sticks, incense, feathers, or an abalone shell, the key is your intention.
With consistency, you’ll begin to notice a lighter, more peaceful atmosphere in your home.
