Using Sage, Incense, Feathers & Sacred Tools
Our surroundings can have a powerful influence on how we feel. After a stressful day, an argument, a period of change or simply the busyness of everyday life, a room can sometimes feel heavy, unsettled or energetically stagnant.
Creating a cleansing ritual gives you an opportunity to pause, reset and consciously change the atmosphere around you.
For many people, spiritual cleansing is less about simply clearing a room and more about creating a space that feels lighter, calmer, more peaceful and supportive of your wellbeing.
Using sage, incense, crystals, feathers and other sacred tools can turn this simple act into a meaningful ritual for releasing unwanted energy and welcoming in the feelings you want your home to hold.
In this guide, we'll explore how to create your own spiritual space-cleansing ritual with intention.
What Is Spiritual Cleansing?
Spiritual cleansing is the practice of intentionally clearing energy that feels heavy, stagnant or no longer welcome within yourself or your surroundings.
Smoke cleansing using herbs and incense has been practised in different forms by cultures around the world for centuries. Smudging specifically refers to sacred ceremonial traditions practised by certain Indigenous peoples, while many modern spiritual practices use the broader term smoke cleansing.
The ritual itself can provide a powerful moment of reflection. As the smoke moves through your space, you can visualise stress, tension and unwanted energy being released while making room for peace, positivity, clarity and renewed intention.
Many people choose to cleanse their home before meditation, manifestation, spellwork or other spiritual practices, while others simply use it whenever their space feels as though it needs an energetic reset.
Why Cleanse Your Space?
Your home should feel like somewhere you can return to yourself.
Energetically cleansing your surroundings can help create a sense of separation between what has happened before and the energy you want to carry forward.
A cleansing ritual can be particularly meaningful when you want to:
• Release the energy of a stressful or emotionally difficult period
• Create a calmer atmosphere after tension or disagreements
• Mark a fresh beginning or important life change
• Prepare your space for meditation, manifestation or ritual work
• Reconnect with yourself after feeling overwhelmed or distracted
• Create a home that feels spiritually protected and peaceful
• Introduce more mindfulness and intention into your everyday routine
Even the simple act of slowing down, opening your windows, focusing on your breathing and consciously tending to your surroundings can help create a greater sense of calm and emotional clarity.
Sacred Tools for Cleansing Your Space
You don't need lots of equipment to perform a cleansing ritual. Choose the tools that feel meaningful to you and allow your intuition to guide you.
Sage
Sage Smudge Sticks are commonly used for smoke cleansing because sage is spiritually associated with purification, protection and removing unwanted energy.
Californian white sage is particularly popular for deeper energetic cleansing, although other dried varieties of sage can also be incorporated into your ritual.
As the smoke rises, imagine it carrying away anything that feels heavy, stagnant or no longer aligned with the energy you want around you.
Feathers
A feather can be used to gently guide the smoke around your room, towards corners, doorways and windows.
Spiritually, feathers are often associated with the element of Air, intuition, freedom and spiritual connection.
Using a feather slowly and intentionally can make the cleansing process feel more ceremonial and encourage you to move through the ritual mindfully rather than rushing.
Abalone Shell (or Fireproof Bowl)
An abalone shell can be placed beneath your sage to safely catch ash and embers.
In spiritual practice, the shell is also associated with the element of Water, bringing a sense of emotional balance and calm to the ritual.
You could also use:
• A ceramic bowl
• A cast iron dish
• A heatproof plate
Always make sure whatever you use is suitable for holding hot ash and embers.
Incense
Incense offers another beautiful way to change the energy and atmosphere of a space.
Different fragrances can be chosen according to the energy you want to create:
• Sandalwood – for grounding, stillness and spiritual reflection
• Frankincense – for spiritual connection, meditation and sacred space
• Palo Santo – traditionally associated with cleansing and uplifting energy
The fragrance itself can also become part of your ritual, helping signal to your mind that it is time to slow down, reconnect and become present.
Crystals
Crystals can add another energetic layer to your cleansing practice.
For example:
• Clear Quartz – for clarity, purification and amplifying intentions
• Black Tourmaline – for protection, grounding and energetic boundaries
• Amethyst – for peace, spiritual awareness and calm
• Selenite – for cleansing, clarity and raising the energy of a space
You can place crystals around your room after cleansing as a symbolic way of maintaining the energy you have intentionally created.
Other Spiritual Tools
You may also like to incorporate:
• Candles
• Essential oil or cleansing sprays
• Bells or singing bowls
• Meditation music
• Affirmation cards
• Tarot or oracle cards
There is no single correct cleansing ritual. The most meaningful practice is one that feels personal to you.
Begin With Your Intention
Before you light your sage or incense, take a quiet moment to stand or sit in your space and take several slow breaths.
Ask yourself:
What am I ready to release?
Perhaps it is stress, tension, worry, emotional heaviness or simply the energy of a difficult day. Then ask:
What would I like to welcome into this space instead?
You might choose peace, love, abundance, protection, happiness, clarity or rest.
Your intention could be as simple as:
"I release any energy that no longer serves me and welcome peace, positivity and protection into this space."
There is no need to find perfect words. What matters most is the meaning behind them.
How to Cleanse Your Space
Open one or more windows before beginning. As well as providing ventilation, an open window can become part of the symbolism of your ritual: giving unwanted energy somewhere to leave.
Light the end of your sage stick and allow it to burn briefly before gently blowing out the flame so that the herbs begin to smoulder and release smoke.
Hold it over an abalone shell or another suitable fireproof dish to catch any falling embers.
Cleanse Your Own Energy First
Before moving through your home, you may wish to begin with yourself.
Using your hand or feather, gently guide the smoke around your body while taking slow, steady breaths.
Move from your head towards your feet and visualise yourself releasing anything you do not want to carry into the ritual.
Imagine tension softening, your thoughts becoming clearer and your energy returning to a calmer, more grounded state.
You could silently repeat:
"I release what feels heavy. I return to peace, clarity and balance."
Move Mindfully Through Your Home
Begin walking slowly through your space, allowing the smoke to move gently around each room.
Pay particular attention to:
• Corners
• Doorways
• Windows
• Mirrors
• Areas where lots of people gather
• Rooms where you sleep or relax
• Places that simply feel energetically heavy to you
Use your feather to direct the smoke where you want it to go and as you move, imagine the atmosphere becoming lighter and calmer.
You may want to repeat an affirmation such as:
"Only peace, love and positive energy are welcome within this home."
Or:
"I release stagnant energy and welcome harmony, protection and light."
Allow yourself to move slowly. The ritual does not need to be rushed. The act of intentionally walking through your home can itself become meditative, encouraging you to become more aware of your surroundings and how each part of your space makes you feel.
Cleansing Your Crystals
You can also pass suitable crystals briefly through the smoke and, as you do, visualise any accumulated or unwanted energy being released and imagine the crystal returning to its natural energetic state.
You might then hold the crystal and set a fresh intention for it.
For example:
"May this crystal support peace and protection within my home."
Or:
"I dedicate this crystal to positive energy, clarity and spiritual wellbeing."
Completing Your Ritual
Once you feel the space has been cleansed, take a moment to notice how the room feels.
Stand quietly.
Breathe.
You may feel calmer, clearer or simply more connected to your surroundings.
Rather than immediately moving on with your day, give yourself a few moments to enjoy the atmosphere you have intentionally created. You might light a candle, sit with a crystal, meditate or simply make yourself a drink and enjoy your refreshed space.
When finished, safely extinguish your sage in an appropriate fireproof container, ensuring that every ember is completely out. Never leave burning herbs, candles or incense unattended.
Alternatives to Sage Sticks
If you prefer, loose dried sage leaves can be placed in a suitable smudging bowl or abalone shell rather than using a hand-tied stick.
Sage Wood, Palo Santo, incense and cleansing sprays can also be incorporated into your spiritual practice.
Palo Santo Wood has a distinctive warm, woody aroma with fresh citrus and mint-like notes. Many people choose it when they want to create an atmosphere that feels uplifting, peaceful and spiritually cleansing.
If smoke isn't suitable for your home, you could instead work with sound, crystals, intention, visualisation or a cleansing spray.
When Should You Cleanse Your Space?
There is no fixed schedule. Some people cleanse whenever their intuition tells them that the atmosphere of their home needs refreshing.
You may feel drawn to cleanse:
• When moving into a new home
• After a stressful or emotional period
• Following an argument or difficult experience
• After having lots of visitors
• Before meditation, manifestation or spellwork
• During a New Moon when setting new intentions
• During a Full Moon when focusing on release
• At the beginning of a new month or season
• Whenever your home feels heavy or unsettled
• Whenever you want to create a sense of renewal
You could also make cleansing part of a regular spiritual wellbeing practice.
Just as we physically tidy our homes, an energetic cleansing ritual can become a symbolic way of checking in with ourselves and asking: What am I ready to let go of, and what would I like more of in my life?
Creating a Space That Supports Your Wellbeing
One of the most beautiful aspects of cleansing is that it encourages you to become intentional about the atmosphere you create around yourself. Your home can become more than simply the place where you live - it can become your sanctuary.
A space where you feel safe enough to rest, grounded enough to reconnect with yourself and peaceful enough to hear your own intuition and small rituals can help reinforce that feeling.
You might keep Black Tourmaline near your entrance for protection, place Amethyst beside your bed for peaceful energy or burn calming incense during meditation.
Over time, these practices can become simple reminders to slow down and consciously care for both your surroundings and yourself.
Final Thoughts
Cleansing your space is about more than smoke or spiritual tools - at its heart, it is an act of intention, release and renewal.
It gives you permission to acknowledge energy that feels heavy, consciously let it go and decide what you want your home to represent moving forward.
Whether you use sage, incense, crystals, feathers or simply your own intention, a cleansing ritual can help transform an ordinary moment into an opportunity to reconnect with yourself.
Open the windows.
Take a breath.
Release what you no longer need.
Then consciously welcome in the energy you want around you: peace, positivity, protection, clarity and light.
