The Magic of Mabon: Celebrating the Autumn Equinox

As summer begins to soften into autumn, the natural world gently invites us to slow down, reflect and prepare for a new season. On 23 September 2026, we welcome the Autumn Equinox, a moment of balance between light and darkness and, in modern Pagan and witchcraft traditions, a time often celebrated as Mabon.

Mabon is closely connected with the themes of harvest, gratitude, balance and letting go. Spiritually, it can be seen as a threshold between the outward, energetic months of summer and the quieter, more reflective seasons ahead. It is a chance to recognise everything that has grown within our lives, appreciate what we have received and gently release anything we no longer wish to carry into the darker half of the year.

What Is Mabon?

Mabon is one of the seasonal celebrations often associated with the modern Pagan Wheel of the Year and is observed around the Autumn Equinox. Traditionally connected with the harvest, it is a time to appreciate abundance and acknowledge everything the Earth has provided before winter begins to draw closer.

For the modern witch or spiritual practitioner, however, the idea of harvest can extend far beyond food and crops. Your personal harvest might be the confidence you have developed, the relationships you have nurtured, the lessons you have learned, the goals you have reached or simply the strength you have found while moving through the year.

Mabon encourages us to notice these things rather than immediately looking towards the next goal. It reminds us that there is value in pausing long enough to recognise what has grown and to appreciate how far we have already come.

The Spiritual Meaning of the Autumn Equinox

At the Autumn Equinox, day and night come into a moment of near balance. Spiritually, this makes Mabon a powerful time to think about balance within ourselves and to notice where our own energy may have shifted.

We all move between different states throughout life: action and rest, confidence and vulnerability, giving and receiving, light and shadow. Mabon reminds us that neither side needs to disappear. Just as nature holds both sunlight and darkness, we can learn to acknowledge every part of ourselves without judgement.

This can be a meaningful time to ask where your life currently feels balanced and where you may need to make changes. You might notice that you have been giving too much of yourself, neglecting rest or pouring energy into something that no longer feels aligned. The changing season becomes a gentle reminder that balance is not about keeping everything perfectly still, but about noticing when something has shifted and responding with intention.

Mabon and the Energy of Letting Go

Autumn offers one of nature's clearest lessons in release. Trees do not struggle to hold onto every leaf; instead, they gradually let go of what is no longer needed and conserve their energy for the season ahead.

Mabon can therefore be a meaningful time to consider what you may also be ready to release. This could be an old habit, resentment, expectation, fear or belief about yourself that no longer belongs in the person you are becoming.

There is no need to force dramatic transformation. Autumn teaches us that release can happen gradually. Some things may feel ready to fall away immediately, while others may need more time. Mabon simply gives us the opportunity to acknowledge that process and make space for change.

Crystals for Mabon

Crystals can make beautiful companions during seasonal rituals because they give us something physical to associate with our intentions. Holding a crystal, carrying it with you or placing it on an altar can help bring your attention back to the energy you are working with.

For Mabon, crystals connected with grounding, gratitude, abundance, protection and reflection are especially meaningful.

Citrine – Abundance & Gratitude

With its warm golden tones, Citrine feels naturally connected to harvest energy. Often associated spiritually with abundance, confidence, manifestation and prosperity, it can be a wonderful crystal to work with when celebrating everything that has already grown within your life.

During Mabon, hold a piece of Citrine and think of three things from the past year that you feel genuinely grateful for. Rather than immediately focusing on what you want next, allow yourself to appreciate what is already present.

Smoky Quartz – Grounding & Release

Smoky Quartz is a beautiful stone for the transition into autumn. It is often associated with grounding, protection and releasing unwanted or stagnant energy, making it especially suited to Mabon rituals focused on letting go.

You could write down something you feel ready to release and place your Smoky Quartz over the paper while you reflect on how your life might feel without carrying that energy forward.

Carnelian – Warmth & Motivation

As the daylight begins to shorten, Carnelian can symbolically carry some of summer's warmth into the months ahead. Spiritually associated with motivation, confidence, creativity and personal power, it can be helpful if you want to move into autumn feeling energised rather than withdrawn.

You might use Carnelian while setting intentions for something you would still like to nurture before the end of the year, especially if it requires courage, enthusiasm or renewed focus.

Black Obsidian – Protection & Reflection

Autumn naturally encourages us to turn our attention inward, making Black Obsidian a meaningful crystal to work with during this season. It is often associated with protection, grounding and deeper self-reflection.

Keep Black Obsidian nearby while journaling or meditating and allow yourself to consider emotions, behaviours or patterns that you may previously have avoided. The aim is not to criticise yourself, but to approach your inner world with honesty and curiosity.

Green Aventurine – Opportunity & Abundance

Green Aventurine is traditionally associated with luck, abundance and new opportunities. Although Mabon celebrates what has already been harvested, every harvest also contains the seeds of what may come next.

Use Green Aventurine while thinking about what you would like to nurture over autumn and winter. It can act as a reminder that quieter seasons can still hold potential, growth and opportunity.

Incense for the Autumn Equinox

Scent can instantly change the atmosphere of a space, making incense a beautiful addition to Mabon rituals. Autumnal fragrances often feel earthy, warming and grounding, helping to create a calm environment for reflection.

Sandalwood is often used for grounding and spiritual connection, while Frankincense can support meditation and cleansing. Cinnamon brings warmth and is commonly associated with abundance and manifestation, while Patchouli can deepen a sense of connection with the Earth. Dragon's Blood is often used within spiritual practice for protection, strength and intention-setting.

Before beginning a Mabon ritual, light your chosen incense and allow the fragrance to fill the room. As the smoke rises, imagine yourself stepping away from the noise of everyday life and entering a quieter, more intentional space.

Create a Simple Mabon Altar

You do not need an elaborate altar to acknowledge the Autumn Equinox. A small shelf, windowsill or corner of a table can become a meaningful sacred space for the season.
You might decorate it with fallen leaves, acorns, pinecones, apples, dried flowers, crystals, candles and incense. These natural objects help connect your practice to the season and can make the change in energy feel more tangible.

Try placing Citrine or Green Aventurine in the centre of your altar to represent abundance, with Smoky Quartz or Black Obsidian beside them to represent release and protection. A candle can symbolise the remaining light of the year and the warmth you wish to carry with you into autumn.

Your altar does not need to look perfect or follow a particular set of rules. Its purpose is simply to create a space that reminds you to pause, reflect and reconnect.

A Mabon Gratitude & Release Ritual

This simple ritual can be performed on the evening of 23 September or at any point around the Autumn Equinox. Find somewhere quiet, light a candle and burn your favourite grounding incense to create a calm atmosphere.

Place two crystals in front of you, choosing one to represent gratitude and one to represent release. Citrine works beautifully for abundance and appreciation, while Smoky Quartz or Black Obsidian can represent letting go.

Take three slow breaths and hold your gratitude crystal. Think about everything that has grown within your life since the beginning of the year. Consider what you are proud of, what has brought you joy, what you have learned and who or what you feel thankful for.

You may wish to write your thoughts in a journal or Book of Shadows. Giving these reflections a physical place on the page can make the ritual feel more intentional and help you return to them later.

Next, hold your release crystal and think about one thing you no longer want to carry into autumn. Write it on a small piece of paper and allow yourself a few quiet moments to acknowledge what that experience has taught you.

You can then say:

"I honour what this experience has taught me. I release what I no longer need and make space for what comes next."

Tear the paper into several pieces and dispose of it mindfully. Keep your chosen crystal nearby for the next few days as a reminder of the intention you have set.

A Crystal Balance Ritual

Because the Autumn Equinox is strongly associated with balance, Mabon is also a wonderful time to explore the relationship between your outward and inward energies.

Choose one lighter crystal, such as Clear Quartz, Citrine or Selenite, and one darker crystal, such as Black Obsidian, Smoky Quartz or Black Tourmaline. Allow one to represent your outward energy, including action, ambition, communication and movement, while the other represents your inward energy, including rest, intuition, reflection and emotional care.

Hold one crystal in each hand, close your eyes and notice which side of yourself currently feels strongest. You may realise that you have been pushing yourself too hard and need more rest, or perhaps that you have been holding yourself back when you are ready to move forward again.

There is no correct answer. The purpose of the ritual is simply to notice what is present and to ask what greater balance might look like for you as you move into autumn.

Celebrate Your Personal Harvest

Modern life can encourage us to move immediately from one goal to another. The moment something is accomplished, we often start thinking about what comes next without allowing ourselves time to recognise what we have already achieved.

Mabon offers something different. It asks us to pause and celebrate our personal harvest, no matter how small or private it may seem.

Think back to the beginning of the year and consider what has changed. You may have developed greater confidence, ended a difficult chapter, started something new, learned to set boundaries or simply grown more comfortable with who you are.

Some achievements are visible to everyone around us, while others happen quietly within.

Both are equally worthy of recognition.

Welcome the Season Ahead

After the Autumn Equinox, the nights continue to lengthen as we move gradually towards winter. Rather than viewing this growing darkness negatively, Mabon encourages us to recognise the value of quieter seasons.

Autumn can become a time for rest, grounding, reflection and deeper spiritual practice. As nature begins to slow down, we can give ourselves permission to do the same.

Light your candles a little earlier, burn your favourite incense, place grounding crystals beside your bed and make time for journaling, meditation or quiet walks beneath changing trees. Notice the shift in the air, the changing colours and the gradual return of cooler days.
Spiritual practice does not always need to involve elaborate spells or ceremonies.

Sometimes simply noticing that the season has changed, and allowing yourself to change with it, is a ritual in itself.

Mabon 2026

On 23 September 2026, the Autumn Equinox invites us to stand briefly between light and darkness. Behind us lies the outward energy of summer, while ahead lies the quieter journey towards winter.

Mabon reminds us that we do not need to rush through either. We can pause at this seasonal threshold, give thanks for what has grown, release what has reached its natural ending and move into the next chapter with greater intention.

As the leaves begin to fall and the world around us changes, we can allow autumn to become a season of grounding, gratitude and gentle transformation.

A simple Mabon affirmation:

"I give thanks for all that has grown. I release what has completed its season. I welcome balance, grounding and transformation as I move gently into autumn."

And we can enter the next season with intention, carrying only what we truly want to take with us.
